Countryside Courtyard Garden
An outbuilding converted into a holiday let required its own garden to be created from what had been a storage area.
The brief was to provide a secure & private courtyard-style garden which worked with the surrounding countryside views and allowed for perfect outdoor dining & relaxation.
Firstly, the land was cleared, hedges trimmed and a complete bespoke perimeter fence built, preserving views across the adjacent fields, complete with attractive entrance gate.
A modern-style pergola was erected to provide height and means for climbing plants to ramble over in time and a bespoke patio & path laid. To keep the garden low maintenance but in keeping with other external areas on site, a gravelled area was chosen in preference to grass underneath the pergola.
A large planting area, teamed with smaller borders and a limited colour palette of yellow, red, blue and white followed, with interesting leaf & stem colours from euphorbia, dogwood, phormiums, an acer and various grasses. Together, the planting provided a bright and cohesive feel. As well as height from the pergola, a small columnar cherry tree was planted amongst this mix of deciduous & evergreen plants for all-year-round interest.
An existing yew hedge was incorporated into the design, to provide more opportunities for nesting wildlife.
Final touches were solar lights over the pergola, pots with herbs/strawberries and ornamentals and a waterproof storage box to keep outdoor cushions dry- job done!
